I am hungry Marge Homero said (that)he was hungry Coming! Direct speech v/s reported speech The exact words someone said. We used quotation marks. Someone tell us what someone else said. We don’t use quotation marks Lisa said “I love dancing” Lisa said she loved dancing Reported speech consist of two parts Homero said (that) he was hungry Reporting verb Reporting clause That is often omitted, especially in everyday English Homero said he was hungry So, how do you use it? Lisa said, “ I love your earrings” Reported speech ● Lisa said she loved my earrings Change the tense Present simple -> Past simple Change the pronoun ● I -> She ● Your -> My From present simple to Lisa said, “ I love your earrings” Lisa said she loved my earrings Past simple We also changed the pronouns! Reporting verbs is there a difference? Say Tell Irregular verbs Say -> said. Tell-> told. Note: When using told you MUST say the person you’re referring to. Examples: He told ME, I told YOU. Personal and possessive adjectives Possessive adjectives are used to show possession or ownership of something. PERSONAL PRONOUNS The possessive adjective needs to agree with the possessor.
