APOSTLE OF CALIFORNIA IX (APÓSTOL DE CALIFORNIA IX) 1771 was a busy year for Fr. Serra; within days of founding both Carmel and San Antonio another mission was founded in the greater Los Angeles area: Mission San Gabriel, Archangel. Founded on the day of the Assumption, August 15th, 1771, this was the first mission founded in the absence of the Father President.. The Tongva Indians in the region were not pleased to see the arrival of the “gray robes,” as they called them, and approached, shouting and brandishing weapons. One of the Gray Robes held up a painting of the Virgin according to the story, and it stopped the warriors in their tracks. They had never seen such a thing and thought the painting was alive. In subsequent days, the Indians came in great numbers with loads of various grains, which they left at the feet of Our Lady. Flash floods were a problem in the region and the mission was relocated several times until finally, in 1775, it was moved to the place it presently occupies in the city of San Gabriel. Although there was peace initially, some of the soldiers raped the wife of the chief, resulting in bloodshed. The Fathers feared the worst when two chiefs approached them, but they came with peace offerings. But again the peace did not last. Making a bad situation worse, the military was reinforced with “recycled ne’er‐do‐wells” who raped and sodomized the Indians, and the situation deteriorated. Serra blamed the difficulties of San Gabriel on the soldiers preying on the Indians, and the Military blamed it on Fr. Serra moving too fast. At this point the Viceroy in Mexico City and the officials in Spain began to openly question the wisdom of the Missions, Serra calling them “tender plants,” which the military were trampling. Despite the issues, the land was so fertile that the Indians from several nearby tribes came to rely on the food that was being grown by the Padres. In a short time the mission settled down and became the largest and richest in California, with some 1700 Indians living in it. In 1781 an “asistencia,” or substation, called “Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles” was established in what is today’s LA to handle the overflow. From today’s perspective it is hard to imagine it having been an afterthought. IHM Pray for us. Fué fundada el día de la Asunción el 15 de Agosto del 1771, esta fué la primera misión fundada en ausencia del Padre Presidente. Los Indios Tongva en la región no estaban muy contentos de ver la llegada de las “túnicas grises,” como ellos los llamaban y se les acercaron, gritando y blandiendo sus armas. Según la historia uno de las túnicas grises alzó una pintura de la Vírgen y eso paró a los guerrerros enseguida. Ellos nunca habían visto una cosa así y pensaron que la pintura estaba viva. En los días siguientes, los Indios vinieron en grandes números con grandes cantidades de diferentes tipos de granos, los cuales dejaron a los pies de Nuestra Señora. Las inundaciones eran un problema en la región y la misión fué mudada varias veces hasta que finalmente en el año 1775, fué movida al lugar que ocupa el día de hoy en la ciudad de San Gabriel. A pesar que inicialmente había paz, algunos de los soldados violaron a la esposa del jefe, que resultó en una matanza. Los Padres temían lo peor cuando dos Jefes se les acercaron, pero ellos vinieron con ofrecimientos de paz. Pero de nuevo, la paz no duro. Haciendo una mala situación mucho peor, los militares fueron reforzados con “ladrones” quienes violaron y sodomizaron a los Indios, y la situación se empeoró. Serra culpó a los soldados de las dificultades de San Gabriel por atemorizar a los Indios, y los Militares culparon al Fraile Serra por ir demasiado rápido. Llegado este punto, el Virrey en Ciudad de México y los oficiales en España empezaron a dudar de la sabiduría de las Misiones, Serra las llamaba “plantas tiernas,” que los militares estaban pisoteando. A pesar de las dificultades, la tierra era tan fértil que los Indios de varias tribus cercanas contaban con la comida que fué cultivada por los Padres. En poco tiempo la misión se estableció y se volvió la más grande y más rica en California, con 1700 Indios viviendo en ella. En el año 1781, una “asistencia” llamada “Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles” fue establecida en lo que hoy es Los Angeles para poder manejar los excesos.
