Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network
USCCB Episcopal Visit with
farmworkers in the
Diocese of Yakima WA
September 5-8 2012, Bishop Joseph Tyson from Yakima
WA Diocese, Bishop John Manz, Bishop’s Liaison to
Farmworkers, Sr. Myrna Tordillo Director of USCCB’s
Pastoral Care of Migrants, Refugees and Travelers’
Sub-committee and Sr. Karen Bernhardt, CMFN
National Coordinator travelled many miles to visit with
the farmworkers in the orchards and hops fields. The
Eucharist was celebrated with more than 100 farmworkers
in Bridgeport, WA and at orchard in Vantage, WA
with 75 families. We also had two meetings with pastors
and pastoral leaders to share about their ministry with
the agricultural workers in Yakima and Wenatchee WA.
Farmworker Housing apartments in George and Mattawa
WA were visited with Mr. John Young, the Yakima Catholic
Charities Director. We also had the opportunity to visit
the teachers and children at the migrant Head Start
center in Mattawa. The Yakima Diocese covers 17,787
square miles and is a “mission diocese.”

Episcopal Visit with migrant
farmworkers in the Diocese
of Toledo, Ohio
On July 6, 2012 with the heat index over 100 degrees, Bishop Leonard Blair, Sr. Karen Bernhardt and 8 adult leaders
from the diocese who work with migrant ministry visited farmworkers in the fields, warehouses, homes/camps and
a migrant Head Start center. The team arrived with Gatorade, water and religious articles to offer their support so
that the workers “ know that although they are far from home, they are not alone and we are here for whatever they
need,” shared Deacon Jose Garcia, Toledo Diocesan Director of Hispanic Ministry. The day ended with a celebration
of the Mass in the Buurma Camp in Willard, Ohio and afterwards with dinner.

The Blue Mountains of North Carolina
served as the site for Creighton
University students to learn about the
migrant reality. The goals included:
Contemplate and reflect on how we
find God in all things, teach students
to get involved in issues of social
justice and human rights, learn
basic methods of coalition building;
develop and expand partnerships with
other educational institutions; act in
solidarity with immigrant community.
In North Carolina, the strenuous labor
in the fields was incredible. Shearing tree’s for just
three hours with a machete evoked muscle spasms for
the students, while the migrant workers work 12 hours
a day for 6 days each week during
the slow season. The evenings
were spent sharing stories with
workers and families and building
community.
Migrant Service Learning
represents strong community
collaboration with the members
of Catholic Migrant Farmworker
Network (CMFN). During the March
2012 experience, Cuauhtémoc
Gonzalez Herrejon, Diocese of
Charlotte and Sr. Karen Bernhardt
HM, National Coordinator of CMFN provided guidance
as they accompanied us throughout the week. We are
most grateful for all who supported us.

en la Diócesis de Toledo, Ohio
El 6 de julio del 2012 con la temperatura arriba de cien grados, el Obispo Leonard Blair, Hna. Karen Bernhardt, y
8 lideres adultos de la diócesis, quienes trabajan con el ministerio de migrantes visitaron los campos, bodegas,
los hogares, campamentos y un centro migrante de Head Start. El equipo llegó con Gatorade, aguas, y artículos
religiosos para ofrecer su apoyo para que los trabajadores” sepan que aunque estén lejos de sus hogares, no
están solos y estamos aquí para lo que necesiten,” compartió el Diácono José García, el Director Diocesano del
Ministerio Hispano. El día término con una celebración de la misa en el campamento de Buurma en Willard, Ohio
y después con una cena.
Las Montañas Azules de Carolina del Norte fue el sitio de los estudiantes de la Universidad de Creighton para
entender y aprender de la realidad migrante. Las metas incluyeron: Contemplar y reflexionar en como encontrar
a Dios en todas las cosas; Enseñar a los estudiantes a involucrarse en temas de justicia social y de los derechos
humanos; Aprender los métodos básicos para construir una coalición; Desarrollar y expandir la colaboración
con otras instituciones educativas; Actuar en solidaridad con la comunidad inmigrante. En Carolina del Norte
la labor en los campos es agotante. Los migrantes trabajan 12 horas al día los 6 días de la semana durante las
temporadas normales y 7 días durante la cosecha. Los estudiantes despuntaron arboles por solo 3 horas con un
machete, resultándoles calambres en los músculos. Las tardes

El Servicio de Aprendizaje del Migrante representa una
colaboración comunitaria muy fuerte con los miembros de La Red
Católica del Campesino Migrante (CMFN). En la experiencia de
Marzo del 2012, Cuauhtémoc González Herrejón, de la Diócesis
de Charlotte y la Hermana Karen Bernhardt, HM, la Coordinadora
de CMFN provinieron orientación y consultación al acompañarnos
durante nuestra semana. Estamos muy agradecidos con todos los
que nos apoyaron.

Weaving the future
together
Fue el nombre que se le dio al taller regional que se
realizo el sábado 28 de abril en el Centro Guadalupano
en Westley, CA. Los equipos de Pastoral Migrante
de las diócesis de Fresno, Monterrey, Sacramento y
Stockton participaron y colaboraron en la preparación
de este. Alrededor de 100 personas asistieron al taller
que facilito el presbítero Eleazar Hernández, sacerdote
zapoteco que colabora con CENAMI (Centro de Estudio
Nacional Mexicano Indígena). El taller dio comienzo a
las 9:00 a.m. con una motivante oración/peregrinación
y concluyo a las 4:00 p.m. con la celebración de la
Eucaristía. Concelebraron el P. Michael McAndrew,
CSsR de Fresno y el diacono Germán Toro de
Sacramento.
El P. Eleazar inicio fundamentando sobre lo que es
la pastoral y ubicando a cada uno en el papel que le
corresponde desde su sacerdocio bautismal, resalto la
acción del Pastor Ministerial a imagen de NS Jesucristo
y nos recordó que los laicos tenemos nuestro campo
propio de pastoreo que es la realidad del mundo civil:
lo económico, político, social, cultural y en la medida
que realizamos nuestra misión, hacemos vida y visible
el Evangelio y el Reino de Dios.
Hablo de la importancia de formarnos para realizar
nuestra misión pues la falta de ella es motivo para no
realizar una pastoral efectiva y que el mundo y las
estructuras no cambien.
El segundo paso fue retomar las conclusiones y
recomendaciones emanadas de las Segunda Consulta
Nacional de Pastoral Migrante. El P. Eleazar reflejo el
nuevo modo de mirar al migrante, como regalo de Dios
por sus done dones y riquezas culturales y religiosas,
y como sujetos activos de esta pastoral en la que ellos
deben tener voz y voto. En grupos interdiocesanos
dialogamos los problemas, urgencias, necesidades y
aportes de la comunidad migrante. Vimos también
los aportes pastorales, recursos y métodos que hasta
hoy se han ido llevando en la pastoral con ellos.
Compartimos luces e ideas y después trabajamos por
grupos diocesanos para, en acción de gracias, plasmar
los logros a nivel parroquia, diócesis y región, ver las
acciones a continuar y a mejorar y plasmar objetivos
que nos lleven a hacer realidad las conclusiones
expresadas en la Consulta.
WEAVING TOGETHER THE FUTURE was the name given
to the regional training that took place on Saturday, April
28th at the Centro Guadalupano in Westley, CA. Around
100 members of the different diocesan Migrant Ministry
teams from Fresno, Monterrey, Sacramento and Stockton
participated and collaborated in the preparation of the
training. Fr. Eleazar Hernandez, a Zapotec indigenous
priest collaborating with CENAMI (National Center for
Studies of Mexican Indigeneous) facilitated the training
that began at 9:00 a.m. with a pilgrimage and prayer and
concluded at 4:00 p.m. with the Eucharistic celebration.
Fr. Mike McAndrew, CSsR from Fresno and Dcon. German
Toro from Sacramento concelebrated with Fr. Eleazar.
Fr. Eleazar began the training with a clear presentation
of what Pastoral action means and the role of the
baptized. He highlighted the role of the Pastor and
his ministerial role as a follower of Jesus and in turn
reminded the laity that their role is to minister to
the ample realities of the civil world. He stressed the
importance of formation as the best way to carry out
their mission and ministry and thus make the Gospel
and the Kingdom of God visible to those they minister
to. Without formation, without training and without
proper “shepherding” from our pastors, we will not be the
ministers the Church and the people need and we will not
see any change or transformation of our world.
With that in mind, Fr. Eleazar turned to the conclusions
and recommendations from the Second National
Consultation on Farmworker Ministry. He applauded the
achievements and the fact that the document presents
a new way of seeing the immigrant. They are seen as
a gift from God because of their gifts and cultural and
religious values; they are being seen as active subjects
of the same ministry in which they must collaborate
because they have a voice and a vote. Highly motivated
to continue ministering with open arms to the migrant
community, we worked in inter diocesan groups to
share the problems, urgencies and needs we encounter
within the migrant community. We also talked about the
resources and pastoral methods that have worked for
us as we minister to the immigrants. After sharing and
presenting the new ideas, we met in diocesan groups
and revisited our achievements at the parish, diocesan
and regional level, we visited our actions and pointed out
the changes that need to occur to make it better an d
finally, we shared the ideas that will help us in making the
conclusions a reality.

California, but spent my
childhood
in
Guadalajara,
Mexico. My family moved from
Mexico to Omaha NE about
twelve years ago. I received my
bachelor’s degree in Business
Administration and Human
Lorena Zamarripa-Lovo
Resources Management from
Creighton University and my Master’s in Educational
Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
(UNL), I served as Student Coordinator for the Office of
Multicultural Affairs at Creighton. As a student leader,
I volunteered at the II National Consultation in 2007
and the migrant service learning trips that took place in
California and Ohio. In October 2011 I participated in the
25th Anniversary Celebration of CMFN in Sacramento,
California. I am currently employed as a High School
Program Coordinator with College Possible, in Omaha,
Nebraska.
When I learned about the opportunity of serving as a
Board Member to CMFN, I knew I wanted to give back to
the organization that has given so much to me. I would
not be the person that I am today if I had not been part
of the activities hosted by CMFN. I am the first in my
family to go to college. I have a passion for education
and a desire to help other reach their full potential. As
a board member, I will have the opportunity to learn
more and educate others about migrant farmworkers.

Yo nací in Paramount, California, pero crecí en
Guadalajara, México. Mi familia se mudó de México
a Omaha NE hace 12 años. Yo recibí mi bachillerato
en Administración de Negocios y Manejo de Recursos
Humanos de la Universidad de Creighton. También
recibí mi maestría en Administración de Educación de la
Universidad de Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). Yo serví como
coordinadora estudiantil para la Oficina de Asuntos
Multiculturales en Creighton. Como líder estudiantil, fui
voluntaria en la ll Consultación Nacional en el 2007 y en
los viajes del servicio de aprendizaje del migrante que
tomaron parte en California y en Ohio. En Octubre del
2011 participé en la celebración del Aniversario de los 25
años de CMFN en Sacramento, California. Actualmente
trabajo como Coordinadora del Programa del Colegio
“College Possible” , en Omaha, Nebraska.
Cuando supe acerca de la oportunidad de servir
como miembro de la Junta de CMFN, yo sabía que quería
devolver a la organización que me ha dado tanto a mí.
Yo no sería la persona que soy hoy en día si no hubiera
sido parte de las actividades organizadas por CMFN. Yo
soy la primera en mi familia en entrar la universidad.
Tengo una pasión por la educación y el deseo de ayudar
a otros a alcanzar su máximo potencial. Como miembro
de la Junta Directiva, tendré la oportunidad de aprender
más y enseñar a otros acerca de los trabajadores
agrícolas migrantes.
